What They Do


Veterinary Technicians are responsible for the well-being of animals. They work hand-in-hand with veterinarians providing the essential medical procedures to ensure that animals are healthy.

Job Duties


  • Provide health care for pets, livestock, zoo, sporting and or laboratory animals

  • Examine animals to determine nature of illness or injury

  • Perform laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood counts

  • Expose and develop x rays and radiographs

  • Treat injuries for pets and or farm animals

  • Assist veterinarian in treatments and surgeries

  • Advise animal owners of animal care and feeding

  • Responsible for ensuring sanitary measures before, during and after all procedures

  • Operate medical equipment

  • Stock and maintain medicines and supplies

  • Euthanize animals when necessary

  • Provide prevention care to maintain animal health

  • Communicate with the veterinarian about the progress of animal treatments and recovery

  • Document for each specific animal treated

Veterinary technicians must complete a post-secondary program in veterinary technology. Technicians need a 2-year associate’s degree and must take a credentialing exam and become registered, licensed, or certified, depending on the requirements of the state in which they work.  In order for a vet technician to be licensed in New York State, applicants must complete a veterinary technician program that has been approved by the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA) and pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).

Employment of veterinary technicians is projected to grow 19 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment is expected to grow as veterinarians continue to use technicians to do general care and lab work on household pets.
